Beamish open air museum is set in 300 acres of stunning countryside and will take you on an in   depth journey into the lives and lifestyles of folk from the North East during early 1800's and the  industrial revolution of 1900's. The museum  is brought to life by the staff wearing costumes of the era and convey the true gritty facts of life up North. Working trams,  steam engines and a mining village show why the North East was so  important during the industrial revolution.   Many of the shops, houses were actual building located elsewhere in the region, dismantled and rebuilt for the purpose of the museum.  The town has a great selection of houses , shops and business of the era and even has it's own victorian park and working pub "The Sun Inn" server alcoholic beverages during opening times with all  buildings furnished to give an insight of decor and furnishings of the time, you even get the chance to underground in a drift mine.

Beamish has  won "Best UK Attraction for Group Visits – Long Visit"  6 times since 2000 it also won  best regional visitor attraction of the year in 2007, and a silver for Best Family Experience category.

During the winter restriction are in place as to what you can visit, open areas include the Town, Colliery Village and tramway. Other areas are closed with reduced admission charges
