Tynemouth
A popular place to come for tourist and locals during summer months Tynemouth is located on the North side of the mouth of the river Tyne about 6 miles from Newcastle. The blue flag certified beach "Tynemouth Long Sands Beach" has become popular with surfers and hosts international competitions for surfing and the other award winning beach King Edwards bay is located next to the priory.
The remains of the priory located at the headland on the North side of the Tyne was the original site of an Anglian monastery that was built during the 7th Century. The monastery was destroyed by the Danish in 875 after various attacks during the 800s and rebulit as the Benedictine priory in 1090. In 1296 the prior was granted permission to build outer defences in the form of a wall.
The main street of Tynemouth village leading to the Castle Gate features a selection of shops, bars and restaurants. A notable place to visit located on the corner of the street is the former congregational church, this 19th century building which retains many original features is home to a range of niche shops run by independent retailers.

UK Pro Surf Tour 2009

Tynemouth play host to the 6th stage of the UK Pro Surf Tour 2009 on the Longsands Beach. The surfing events features professional surfers showing off there skills on the top rated waves of Tynemouth. Runing in conjunction with Xtreme festival featuring Skateboarding, Snowboarding, Kite Surfing and Windsurfing together witha range of live music.
Tynemouth Market
Located in the renovated Victorian Tynemouth Metro Station, this little gem of a market is haven to a a wide range of bargains with Saturdays offering antiques. bric a brac and books and Sunday offering craft, household and practical items. The train station also offers sumptious food in the award winning Italian restaurant ilforno, winner of the gaurdian news restaurant of the year.

Overlooking the North sea the Bluereef Aquarium is a popular tourist attraction allowing you discover a whole new underwater world, including rays sharks, sea lions, octopus and hundreds of other tropical creatures.
