The Gate
One of the largest complexes in the city is ‘The Gate’, named after the thoroughfare on which it stands – Newgate Street. It has three floors, and is home to 19 venues, including bars, cafes, and an impressive 12 screen cinema “The Empire”, which replaced the old Odeon. It opened in 2000, and is located at the bottom of Percy Street which leads from the Haymarket. It hosts Asper’s casino (a taste of Las Vegas in the north east of England) which also has a bar and restaurant. The Gate has many bars, including the Keel Row and Tiger Tiger (one of the biggest, having a restaurant, nightclub, and six bars) and host of others. The area is extremely popular with many bars staying open until 3am. . If it’s food you’re after try one of the many restaurants, which include Nando’s and Frankie and Benny’s.
St James’s Park, home of Newcastle United football team is near here, as well as Chinatown, with its many restaurants.
The Gate is on the site of Newgate House, which was home to the Mayfair (known as the Mayfair Ballroom, Rock Club etc.) which hosted many famous rock bands over the years.
400 new jobs were created when The Gate was built, and an amazing 600 during the construction itself. Its glass facade was designed by Space Decks Ltd, and ‘Ellipsis Eclipses’ the 12m high statue outside it was designed by Danny Lane. The Gate cost £80 million, and covers 19,235 sq metres.
