Newcastle Upon Tyne Shopping

Newcastle and Gateshead are twinned although Gateshead is now trying to be recognised as a separate City. Newcastle lies on the North side of the Tyne, and Gateshead to the  South.  Eldon Square  lies to the North of central station and covers a large area including Monument to Haymarket . It contains 156 shops, among which Marks and Spencer, John Lewis and Fenwick. Eldon Gardens and Monument Hall are other shopping centres in the town center. Northumberland Street form the largest shopping street in Newcastle which also goes from the Monument to Haymarket area and include large stores such as BHS and M &S. The main shopping areas is ideal to get around and everything is within walking distance. Grey's monument is a central location with direct access to Eldon Square and near Northumberland street. The Grainger Market is a covered market that dates back to 1885 offering fresh meat, fruit and vegetables.  The market has in excess of 250 shops and stalls where geneartions of the same family still operate the stalls. The oldest surviving Marks and Spencer (The Penny Bazaar) is also housed in the Grainger Market.

 

Eldon Square

eldon-squareLocated in central Newcastle, Eldon square shopping complex opened in 1976 and was at the time the largest indoor shopping centre in the UK extending from the Gate to Grey's Monument and up to the Haymarket joined by a walkway over Blackett Street. The mall has over 156 stores and restaurants with large stores occupied by John Lewis, Fenwicks and Marks and Spencers and a good choice of other well known high street stores and a range of independant specialist stores. Parts of Eldon Square are undergoing undergoing major reconstruction which is due to be complete in 2010 offering more choice to shoppers.

 

Metrocentre

metrocentreThe Metrocentre situated in Gateshead is the largest shopping centre in the UK with  hundreds of shops, departments stores, restaurants. Regular buses leave from Newcastle  Station every 15 minutes.  There are nearly 330 shops including department stores such as Debenhams, House of Frazer, Marks and Spencer. Also there are parts with a topic, as The forum, The Studio, The Village and whisks Court where you find smaller Novelty stores.

 

 

Royal Quays

Royal-QuaysThe discount outlet centre which offers up to 60% of goods is  located in North shields has over 50 top brand name stores to choose from including M & S, Nike, Next, Marks & Spencers, Reebok, Clarks, Thorntons, Birthdays, Claires accessories, Carphone Warehouse, Black and Decker, Body Shop etc. There are plenty of free parking spaces and is easy to get to by car and the nearest metro station is Percy Maine which is about a 10 minute walk, alternatively plenty of buses can be caught. Team Valley

Team Valley ShoppingRetail World is a shopping complex with excellent access from the A1 and only 3 miles south of Newcastle.  The retail park was refurbished in 2002/2003 and is very popular with locals and tourists alike with increasing number of visitors year after year. There is no direct access by metro although there are many buses that head especially from the Gateshead interchange.



Dalton Park

dalton-parkThe largest outlet shopping centre in the North East with big  name brands at up to 50% off retail prices.  Located 20 minutes South of Newcastle, off the A19 Dalton Park is easy to get to by car and there are regular buses from Durham, Peterlee, Seaham and Sunderland.

 

Kingston Park

KingstonParkRetail01Kingston Park located 4 miles North West of Newcastle and a  number of retailers with the largest Tesco's in the UK as it main retailer, addiotnally there is Matalan, PC World, Comet, Currys and Marks and Spencer food store together with a range of smaller outlets.

 

Markets

Newcastle Quayside Market

Newcastle Quayside Market is a bustling market that operates every Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. with tourists and locals looking to pick up a bargain with traders selling a wide range of products from fish to fashion, a lot traders have local arts and crafts, hand made fudge and cakes.

South Shields Market

South Shields open air market is popular market that is open on Saturdays and Mondays  with a flea market taking place on Fridays. Bargain hunters visit the market in there thousands to save the pennies. Stalls offer a variety of goods for sale including a range of fashion products, fresh fruit and veg at greatly reduced prices,a meat auction and a range of craft and electrical products It is held around the old 18th century town hall and is the hub of the town center

Tynemouth Market

Tynemouth-marketTyne market is located in the metro station at Tynemouth, the stunning victorian station which has recently undergone redevelopment is hive of activity and banter with stalls with a mix of bargains to be had.
