The Metro is Newcastles equavilent to the London tube  and is a very convienient way of getting around from the airport to Newcastle, Gateshead the coast and Sunderland. The Metro runs from 5:45am through to 11:30pm approx and tickets can be purchased at all stations and are available in the variety of forms including singles, returns, transfares or from the Nexus special deals on student and yearly passes are available, for details of pricing and conditions visit the  the Nexus website.

The metro sytem stops at 60 Stations and has been recognised as one of the most efficient modes of transport n the UK carrying 40 million people a year. The fares range for singles from £1.40 to £2.90, but choosing returns and daysavers can save money. All stations have displays with where the next train is going to and how long before the next train. 

Accessibility on the Metro System

The Metro make every effort to aid those with mobility issues  and has a range of facilities to aid disabled  travellers.

  • The Metro system allows the use of wheelchairs and powered wheelchairs with width max width 700mm and length of 1200mm.
  • The use of mobility scooters are not permitted on the Metro system stations and platforms, due to issues regarding safety, however lighter ones can be folded and carried on board.

Facilities at Metro Stations

To accessing and leave the platforms while disabled or have pushchairs use the lifts or ramps available at the stations .

Assistance

If you need assistance while on the platform , every station has a help point that are usual situated near the ticket machines and sometime on the platforms. To be used in the case of emergencies or general enquiry, or inform staff of a a problem with the system.  A taxi can also be ordered through these help point to pick you up at you destination station although if you a wheelchair accessible taxi is required make sure that the taxi you have booked can accommodate your needs.

Toilets

Toilets are only available only at a few stations including Heworth, Gateshead, South Gosforth Whitley Bay and Four Lanes Ends which include an accessible toilet.
