Christianity is rich in saints; holy men and women who lived selflessly, furthering the cause not only of Christianity, but of scholasticism, medicine, teaching and other disciplines. The Venerable Bede is one of these. His famous work, 'A History of the English Church and People', is of great importance, both in a religious sense and historically. Although written after the period he chronicles, it is one of thefew accounts of that time (sometimes called the Dark Ages).

A fascinating way to find out about Bede is to visit Bede's World located in Jarrow, Tyne and Wear. This amazing place is where you can also find out about the world in which Bede and his monastic community lived. It's not just a museum - there are plenty of things to do for both adults and children.

Children and adults alike will enjoy visiting the Anglo Saxon farm with its hall and workshops. The amazing thing about the farm is that it was built using the same techniques that would have been employed in the Middle Ages. Gyrwe which was the Anglo Saxon Name for Jarrow) farm also has animals not usually found on a modern farm, including wild boar and rare breeds of cattle. You can even see realistic representations of medieval life, with people dressed in authentic costumes. Don't miss the wonderful new exhibition in the Museum, called The Age of Bede. You can complete your experience by visiting St Paul's Church and the original monastic ruins, transporting yourself back 1300 years into our history. You'll be ready for a break after all that, so visit Jarrow Hall for a relaxing meal, and to soak up the atmosphere of a lovely Georgian house.

Just one more important point; a bid is being made for the monasteries of St Paul, Jarrow and St Peter, Wearmouth to be a World Heritage site. To learn more visit http://www.wearmouth-jarrow.org.uk
